The city of Wollongong is located just south of Sydney and is separated from the southern suburbs by the magnificent Royal National Park. Wollongong is an industrial city with its main product being steel. BHP Ltd, has been involved in the steel industry here since before world war two and has been an integral part in the growth of the city. These days, if you look past its industrial background you will find some of Australia’s most beautiful coastline and more often, people are looking at the greater Wollongong area as a holiday destination. To the north, the Royal National Park is quiet spectacular. It is an ideal place for a bushwalk along the cliff tops following the ocean. Here you will find relics of its Aboriginal heritage with carvings of whales and the like etched permanently into the sandstone. The higher hilltops along this section of coast provide ideal venues for hang gliding and the views are spectacular. On any given weekend you will find the sky full of gliders soaring out over the cliffs then landing on the beach below.
Wollongong is now a modern city with a growing population. The locals enjoy some of Australia’s best surfing beaches and the hinterland in beautiful. There is so many places that you can visit that are really close. Take a drive up the Macquarie Pass through Albion Park and on to Roberson and Bowral. The bushland here is magnificent with Lyrebirds and Wallabys are plentiful. To the south are beautiful seaside resort towns. Shell Harbour, Nowra, Gerringong and Kiama and Ulladulla are all coastal towns with absolutely magnificent coastal scenery. If you like the beach, this region is paradise. There are an endless array of sensational beaches each separated by another craggy sandstone headland. The towns are all unique with shops, galleries and restaurants. Keen fishermen just love this region with fantastic beach and estuary fishing. Boating is popular and each of these towns has excellent facilities.
Wollongong now has excellent accommodation for holiday makers. There are plenty of excellent hotels and apartments available. Shopping is equally well catered for with a large business center and plenty of suburban shopping malls. Restaurants, boutiques and cafes abound. Woollongong is an ideal place for a short break or a new place to experience for a weekend away.
